“If I Could Talk, I’d Tell You My Name”

DHA advocates microchipping as a permanent method of pet identification

Have you ever seen a dog or cat roaming through your neighborhood and wondered if it belonged to someone? You may have even fed and sheltered an animal that took up residence in your yard. Perhaps the animal was friendly, and you wondered, “If only this little guy could talk, he could tell me who he is…”

Actually, many lost pets can communicate not just their name, but also their owner’s name and address! The device that enables them to perform this amazing feat is a microchip, a tiny silicon chip that’s inserted with a syringe under the animal’s skin between its shoulder blades.  The simple procedure takes just a few seconds and is no more painful than a vaccination. Many animal agencies, including the Delaware Humane Association, the Delaware SPCA, and several area vet clinics, have scanning devices that can detect the microchipped information and trace the pet’s owner.

If you see a stray animal, especially one that is friendly and appears to be owned, please take it to an agency that has a microchip scanner.  With your help, the plight of a lost pet may turn out to be a story with a happy ending.

DHA advocates microchipping as a permanent method of pet identification, and offers this service at all Wellness Clinics.
