Outreach

Humane Education

In addition to our outreach efforts, part of our violence prevention initiatives include a Perfect Partnership teaching children humane treatment to animals and people in school. A national model this program is working at Forwood Elementary School.

Our first Humanity Camp for children takes this model outside the classroom. On July 15th the Delaware Humane Association launched its first pilot Humanity Camp, a violence prevention program targeting children in the Southbridge Community or other depressed areas. Twentyfive children ages 6 to 10 and four summer youth counselors participate in this program.

This enriching summer program enabled these children to experience the importance of treat all living things humanely first-hand. This program is a partnership between the Delaware Humane Association, the Neighborhood House, Family and Workplace Connection and the City of Wilmington.

If your school or community is interested in having one of these programs call 571-8171 ext 301 and leave a message for Debra Grandizio.

  Compassion Education

Creating a More Humane Society,
One Child at a Time

Have you ever thought about the effect that homeless animals can have on children? Well, DHA has. This year DHA plans to expand our Humane Education Programs.

We have several exciting presentations to offer to local schools and youth groups. Among the topics that will be discussed are: Proper Pet Care, What is a Shelter?, Safe Animal Interactions, The Pet Overpopulation Problem, and The Power of Praise. Many of these programs require the students to draw comparisons between the needs of humans and all living things, with the goal of cultivating kinder and more compassionate children.

If you are interested in arranging a field trip to DHA, having a DHA representative visit your child’s school, or becoming a trained volunteer Humane Education presenter, please contact Deb Grandizio at dgrandizio@verizon.net for more information.
