Admitting an Animal to DHA
Foster Homes Needed
If you have found an animal but can act as foster home until the shelter can take them in, please learn about our foster program.
DHA does its best to accommodate the dozens of daily requests to admit stray or abandoned animals, or owner give-ups. However, since we do not euthanize to make room for more animals, we are constantly trying to balance the needs of our current residents with the welfare of animals seeking admission. In an effort to help the most animals in the fairest way possible, DHA follows intake procedures based on a behavior and health assessment of candidates for admission.
To protect the current residents of the shelter, animals that are spayed/neutered and free of major health problems will have a better chance of being admitted to DHA. If possible, please make sure that all vaccinations and screening tests are up to date, and provide DHA with written documentation of all medical procedures, including proof of spay/neuter surgery. If DHA determines that tests and/or vaccinations are needed, our staff will administer these treatments for the following fees:
FeLV/FIV Test (feline leukemia/feline AIDS)
$25.00 per cat/kittenFVR-CP (feline distemper)
$10.00 per cat/kittenRabies
$10.00 per cat/kittenHeartworm Test
$25.00 per dogDHP-PV (canine distemper)
$10.00 per dog/puppyBordetella (kennel cough)
$10.00 per dog/puppyRabies
$10.00 per dog/puppy
Animals requiring vaccinations will need to be assessed when our staff vet is in. They must also return to your home for at least 5 days, or until there is room at DHA.
If you are unable to pay for vaccines/testing, please consider a smaller monetary donation or possibly items such as laundry detergent, bleach, blankets, towels, paper towels, etc.
If you would like to have one or more animals admitted to DHA, please call the shelter (571-0111) to schedule an assessment (performed Tues-Sat, 11 to 3:30).
